| Coyote Hunt |
The Addison County Humane Society would like to bring
to your attention several organized coyote hunting events taking place in our community.
The hunts typically attract a large number of hunters and hunting dogs that track and
shoot large numbers of coyotes in an attempt to curtail the coyote population. As
there is not a specific coyote hunting season, these events may take place at any
time, day or night, without public notice. Consequently, we feel it appropriate to
highlight the associated dangers to pet owners and outdoor enthusiasts. Be aware of
unusual hunting activity in your area. Wear orange or brightly colored clothing and
keep your dogs on a leash if you're going out and about.
Additionally, as an advocate for the animals in our community, ACHS wishes to express
our concern for the widespread, unnecessary suffering and death of coyotes during these
types of events. There is no scientific basis that bounty hunts control the coyote
population or that coyotes have a significant impact on our deer herd. We encourage
everyone to embrace the welfare of the animals in our community and the vital role
they play in our lives and in nature.
