Volunteer - Giving a couple hours of your time is a great way to help make Addison County a better place for animals. The Humane Society relies on volunteers to perform vital functions around the shelter and for the organization.
You can make a difference!
Please Read these General Volunteer Guidelines BEFORE completing an application
Application
All prospective volunteers must complete a Volunteer Application and submit it to the Volunteer Coordinator.

volunteer applicationOrientation
If you indicate on your application that you would like to work with the animals at the shelter we will contact you to schedule your mandatory orientation session. You must attend this session prior to working with the animals.

The orientation session will last approximately one hour. During this session, we will review the opportunities for working with the animals and review our procedures. You will receive a Volunteer Handbook to take with you to read covering ACHS' mission, policies, rules and procedures for working at the shelter. When you have read the handbook and are ready to start helping at the shelter, return your Volunteer Agreement and Questionnaire and we will set up an appointment to meet with you for your first volunteer visit.

Youth Volunteers
Volunteers that are less than 18 yrs old must have a parent or guardian sign the application AND attend the orientation session with them. Any volunteer younger than 16 must have a parent or adult guardian with them at all times to work with the animals. Please note that not all activities, and not all animals, are appropriate for Youth Volunteers. Guidance will be provided by staff or the Volunteer Coordinator for the correct match.
Community Service
Person who are interested in volunteering to fulfill community service hours, MUST register through our Shelter Manager in addition to completing the application. Arrangements for an interview and time for the orientation must be made by the Community Service Agency program coordinator with our ACHS Shelter Manager. Volunteers sign in with the ACHS Shelter Manager for each visit, and the ACHS Shelter Manager will sign off and report your hours to the appropriate agency.
Commitment
To maximize the benefit and experience for volunteers, staff and shelter animals we ask that you make a minimum three (3) month commitment and come into the shelter at approximately the same time each day, week or month, as much as possible.

We appreciate your interest in becoming a Volunteer at the Addison County Humane Society. Please send your completed papers to liz@addisonhumane.org or drop it off at the shelter during open business hours, or mail it to 236 Boardman Street, Middlebury, VT 05753. The Volunteer Coordinator will contact you when your completed application is received.
